Maintaining Green Spaces in Thurnscoe

Big Local Thurnscoe is working hard to create a healthy environment for  everyone to enjoy. Our Green Space activity is more varied than ever- over the next 2 years we have more than 150k committed towards new play and leisure equipment, floral displays and Incredible Edible projects.
We also have money set aside towards community clean up days and we have already invested over £5,000 towards improvements at Thurnscoe Reservoir. We welcome all residents at our Green Space sub-group and volunteers are welcome at all of our planting and clean up days – please get in touch if you think you can help.

What have we done so far?

Planting Raised Beds

Over the past year we have installed and planted up 3 tier planters, installed  matching half moon planters along railings in the centre of the village and planted up a number of raised wild flower beds which produced a dazzling display in the summer. We have also planted and maintained displays at the 3 entrances to the village.

This year we plan to maintain and build on all of this work, introducing hanging baskets and more planters to the village. Interpretation boards will be installed in 3 locations in the village including Thurnscoe Reservoir and Thurnscoe Flower Park.

Our Incredible Edible Thurnscoe project was launched last year and we have to date planted two crops of edible produce for residents to enjoy. Signs have been produced to display alongside IE beds encouraging people to weed and water and help themselves to produce when ready. This year we hope to restore the Pitch and Putt facility at Houghton Road community centre and add edible beds at this location.

We are hoping to have new leisure and play equipment in at least 2 locations this year and we are looking to revamp the underpass at Thurnscoe train station with exciting new art work.

Partnership Work

In Thurnscoe we really benefit from the close relationship we have with our partners in achieving our green space projects;  Dearne Area Team (Barnsley MBC) and  Twiggs are always ready to support us in our plans and with practical help on the ground.
Our links with the Dearne Valley Landscape partnership also helps us to maximise our impact on the green space agenda as we plan to collaborate on a number of significant projects in the next few years. To achieve more we are always looking for new volunteers and new partners- do get in touch if you can help in any way.
